Minimizing the Impact
of Gum Disease
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated one out of every two adults in the country have gum disease. It’s one of the most common oral health problems in the world and can cause a wide array of symptoms, depending on how far it has been allowed to advance. Our goal at Huckabee Dental is to treat the early signs of this disease to minimize the damage it causes your smile.
Why Choose Huckabee Dental for
Periodontal (Gum) Disease Treatment?
Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that takes place over the course of one or two appointments, depending on the progression of your gum disease. First, we’ll scale your teeth and thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from their surfaces, as far down as the pockets of the gums. Then, we’ll smooth out the roots by removing any hardened bacteria deposits. This will allow your gums to reattach to your teeth, protecting the roots from becoming damaged.
In combination with scaling and root planing, we typically also recommend Periostat antibiotic therapy. This medication is doxycycline hyclate and comes in the form of capsules that you can take daily to help your body fight off the oral infection. We’ll determine the length of your treatment before prescribing your medication to you and have you come in for regular follow-up appointments to make sure you’re seeing the expected effects of the medication.
